Cook County taxpayers foot the bill for expensive perk

On June 24th, 2008 the Better Government Association and Fox Chicago News revealed that the Cook County Board had no idea how many cars they own or who was driving them. However, upon reviewing the informal, incomplete lists of drivers and vehicles provided by the county, the BGA and Fox found many of the vehicles registered for overnight use being assigned to workers with connections to elected county and city officials. “Residents of Cook County suffer from the highest sales tax rate in the nation,” said Jay Stewart, the Executive Director of the BGA, and now the County is using those extra funds to provide “[perks] to connected insiders.” Stewart added, “ with gas prices skyrocketing… you would hope that the county would drop its lackadaisical attitude toward spending and try to run a more efficient government.”
