The Democrats running in the February primary for Illinois governor, incumbent Pat Quinn and Comptroller Dan Hynes, attacked each other aggressively and repeatedly with a civilized fury on Tuesday night, January 19, at a lively, informative and entertaining hour-long debate sponsored by the Better Government Association, ABC-7 and the League of Women Voters.
Hynes accused Quinn of botching and then covering up the sordid details of the Correction Department's early prisoner release program. Quinn accused Hynes of ignoring horrific problems at Burr Oak Cemetery and in a taxpayer-funded cemetery trust program.
Hynes blasted Quinn for proposing middle class tax hikes. Quinn called Hynes' plan to tax only the wealthy "fantasy land."
And then, near the end of the debate, the warriors said they actually like each other and will be friends after the debate.
Welcome to the wild and wacky world of Illinois politics.
Questioners at the debate included the Better Government Association's Executive Director Andy Shaw, Daily Herald Editor Madeleine Doubek and ABC-7 political reporter Charles Thomas.
